Information
New kiln - New studio location. I moved here from the Chicago Area during covid, and am rebuilding my business. I have been a full-time woodfire potter for 25+ years.
I'm looking for firing partners, and to build a community around this kiln. Experienced wood firers and beginners both welcome. This is a wonderful kiln -- either chamber can be fired by itself, or both together.
Accomodations/site: The kiln is located adjacent my studio and home on 17 acres of beautiful forest and fields bordering state forest. 6 miles from Lake Michigan. Large 19th century farmhouse can accomodate 8 guests. Travel trailer sleeps 2. 3 full indoor bathrooms. One outhouse. Composting toilet in heated/air conditioned studio. Shared modern kithchen in house. Tent sites in pine forest. One lg gas grill and several charcoal grills available.
Our firing community is collaborative, friendly, and supportive at all times. We learn from and respect each other. Bossy, competitive attitudes are not tolerated.
Normal Schedule: Load on Fri., light fire that evening. 6 hr. Firing shifts of 2-3 start at 8 pm. Build ash bed over night, reaching 500° by morning. Sat. morning. Kiln owner - Mary - in consultation with other experienced woodfirers present, will provide the firing schedule and coaching re: stoking frequency, species and size of wood in use throughout the firing.
Every participant will be expected to prep. wood throughout.
44 hours to fire whole kiln - both chambers. Up to 3.5 full cords
38 hrs - 1st chamber alone. 2.5 full cords of mixed hardwood + some pine).
24 hrs. - 2nd chamber alone. (Haven't done that yet - guessing 1.5+ cords.)
